Looking back at the Research & Creative Practice conference
Together with Regieorgaan SIA (the Dutch programme office for practice-based research) and the Cultural Participation Fund, we are running the pilot programme Research & Creative Practice. The aim is to strengthen collaboration between practice-based research and the cultural and creative sector. At a conference on this topic, more than 150 researchers, creatives and policymakers shared their knowledge and experiences.

Major societal challenges cannot be solved from within a single discipline or sector. They call for cross-fertilisation between different worlds. Such collaborations often turn out to be complex. This is why the Research & Creative Practice conference on 18 May 2026 focused on the following question: how can practice-based research and the creative and cultural sector strengthen each other in a more sustainable and equal way? At Utrecht Library, more than 150 researchers, creatives and policymakers from the cultural and creative sector came together to discuss this topic.
About the Research & Creative Practice Pilot
The aim of the pilot programme, which runs from 2025 to 2027, is to explore how practice-based research can strengthen the cultural and creative sector’s knowledge development and exchange. The focus is on helping to address societal challenges through innovative and equal forms of collaboration. In doing so, the pilot not only provides scope for experimentation but also lays the foundations for sustainable, cross-domain partnerships.The Artistic and Design Research Grant Scheme is part of the pilot. In the first round, nine projects received a grant. This is a joint grant scheme run by Regieorgaan SIA and the Creative Industries Fund NL.
