New Open Call Grounding the Cloud: Material Realities in Digital Culture
Our digital habits, such as storing data in ‘the cloud’ or using generative AI, are mostly taken for granted. However, the ecological consequences often remain invisible, such as the energy consumption of data centres and the growing amount of ‘e-waste’. What is the impact of our virtual data, including the physical impact? What lies behind our interfaces? How can we use (or reuse) digital technology within the limits of our planet?
With the new Open Call Grounding the Cloud, the Creative Industries Fund NL wants to support projects that reduce the ecological impact of digital technologies and data consumption, provide insight or offer sustainable alternatives. In doing so, we are encouraging making and thinking processes that relate to topics such as regenerative culture, ‘degrowth’, low-tech, the use or reuse of hardware (including obsolete hardware) and ownership (and renewed ownership) over the technologies we use.
The call closes on 25 September, 16:00 CEST. Consultation hours will be organised on Wednesday 20 August (Dutch) and Wednesday 10 September (English), during which Team Digital Culture will tell more about the call and you can ask questions.
