Spatial Design Action Programme 2026-2028: three new open calls for local spatial challenges
How can housing, climate, mobility, nature and economic challenges be more intelligently connected in the limited space available in the Netherlands? Over the coming three years, the Creative Industries Fund NL will once again invest in the power of design-based research to address complex spatial issues by continuing the Spatial Design Action Programme (ARO). Between 2026 and 2028 we will launch three new open calls specifically aimed at initiatives by local and regional coalitions.

How can housing, climate, mobility, nature and economic challenges be more intelligently connected in the limited space available in the Netherlands? Over the coming three years, the Creative Industries Fund NL will once again invest in the power of design-based research to address complex spatial issues by continuing the Spatial Design Action Programme (ARO). Between 2026 and 2028 we will launch three new open calls specifically aimed at initiatives by local and regional coalitions.
Whereas the open calls during the previous programme period focused on specific themes, the Spatial Design Action Programme will adopt an area-based approach from 2026 to 2028. The focus will be on localities where multiple spatial challenges converge and the effects of spatial change are immediately felt in everyday life. These may include places, neighbourhoods, villages, towns and landscapes where housing, climate, energy, accessibility, nature or heritage challenges intersect.
The open calls will provide cross-disciplinary coalitions with the opportunity to use design-based research to develop new spatial perspectives for the future as well as solutions. Designers will thereby collaborate with residents, civil society organisations, public authorities, knowledge institutions and other stakeholders. The aim is not only to develop ideas, but also to acquire knowledge, strengthen collaborations and actively contribute to the living environment’s quality.
A total of three open calls will be launched between 2026 and 2028. Together, the selected projects will constitute a learning network that shares experiences, insights and methods. This will enable lessons learned by individual projects to be applied elsewhere and by others.
