Traveling expo for Different Approach to Housing

Monday 4 November marked the debut of our traveling pop-up expo for Different Approach to Housing. The installation was on display at Dag van de Stad (Day of the City) in Apeldoorn, an event that invited participants to discuss what makes residents of the city and surrounding region happy, or unhappy. In the coming period, the pop-up expo will feature at various conventions and meet-ups focused on the housing challenge.

The purpose of this pop-up expo is to share the results of the projects that emerged from the Open Call: Different Approach to Housing. This Open Call forms part of the Spatial Design Action Programme, through which the Creative Industries Fund NL wishes to promote the implementation of research by design in the approach to major transition challenges, including for spatial planning. The research by design method offers an answer to the question of how co-creation can be realised with stakeholders such as citizens, entrepreneurs, experts, organisations and authorities. It helps bring challenges into focus, clarify conceptual directions, weigh and connect interests, organise a support base, and initiate new collaborations. This creates room for comprehensive perspectives for the future and potential avenues for solutions, as well as for new insights regarding policy development by public authorities and market players.

about the installation

The installation for the pop-up exhibition has the shape of an elongated house that visitors can tilt in different directions , and is constructed using second-hand canvas and tent poles. This makes the installation (conceived and executed by architect, designer and curator Bruno Vermeersch) adaptive, distinctive, lightweight, and easy to set up and dismantle.

The fourteen projects that collaborated in the Open Call are introduced on the canvas. The texts were provided by process supervisor Arie Lengkeek / commongrounds and researchers René Boer and Mark Minkjan van Loom. The graphic design for the prints on the installation was provided by Studio van Onna.
