A total of 12 projects have been selected in the Open Call Residency Abroad. Roxanne Minten, Internationalization coordinator, reflects on the selection.

With the Open Call Residency Abroad, the Creative Industries Fund NL wants to encourage designers to take a new step in the artistic and professional development of their practice and to raise their profile internationally. As havens for experimentation and research, and for exploring, expanding and building national and international contacts, networks and fields of activity, residencies are ideally suited to this purpose.

general impression

In this round, projects have a wide variety of themes and topics, including ecosystems, transformations in land and climate, and digital and physical archiving. Most of the projects are based on local collaborations and involve a research component that explores local practices or techniques. Cultural sensitivity to the context in which the residency takes place comes to the fore well here.

assessment

All the applications received were submitted for advice to an independent committee consisting of Isabel Driessen, Arthur Steiner and Yin Yin Wong. They assessed the projects on the following criteria:
- The artistically relevant quality of the project;
- The planned approach and the motivation;
- The relevance of the residency to the expected practice development.

numbers

From the 23 applications assessed, 12 were selected, bringing the percentage of applications being awarded grants to 56.5%. A budget of € 250,000 was available for this open call. The maximum contribution per project was € 15,000. The contribution is intended to cover the costs of participation, travel, rental, accommodation, materials and presentation.

follow-up

This was the Fund’s second open call for residencies abroad as part of a wider residency programme within the Internationalization programme. Working periods abroad will be offered again in 2024. Keep an eye on our newsletter for information.
