For the Open Call Residency Jatiwangi art Factory 2025, the Creative Industries Fund NL received seven applications. From the submitted proposals, Remi Groenendijk and Hein van Duppen were selected for a working period at Jatiwangi art Factory in Indonesia.

Jatiwangi art Factory (JaF) is an artistic collective in Majalengka, Indonesia, which works out of a former roof-tile factory. It focuses on the local community and the terracotta industry in the Jatiwangi district. Clay and strengthening the community are at the heart of their activities, which range from visual arts and music to education and festivals. JaF also works under the name Kota Terrakota on a shared vision for the future of the local terracotta industry, with the emphasis on preserving the cultural landscape and advancing a new clay culture. The residency at JaF offers designers and architects the opportunity to conduct research, expand their network and develop new work, with a focus on the local community and the landscape.

general impression

The committee, consisting of Belit sağ, Eileen Stornebrink, Philip Schütte and Isabel Driessen, appreciated the applications that clearly reflected on the local context of Jatiwangi and the issues relating to community, landscape and earth. Positively assessed projects were well aligned with the dynamics of the region and contained innovative methods and participatory elements of importance to the local community. The proposals were characterised by high artistic quality and a strong relationship with the designers’ personal development.

Architectural Aid Agency (Remi Groenendijk) - Warung Tanah
The Warung Tanah project by architect Remi Groenendijk explores emission-free building with earth (Tanah) and local materials. During the eight-week residency, Groenendijk will first conduct local building research, after which he will experiment with methods to build a sustainable, small-scale pavilion or restaurant. The project ends with the joint construction of a structure, made of earth blocks and local materials such as bamboo, which demonstrates the potential of emission-free building and contributes to local building culture.

Hein van Duppen - The land you leave behind: an experimental investigation into the clay landscape of Jatiwangi
The project The land you leave behind by spatial designer and artist Hein van Duppen explores Jatiwangi’s landscape and terracotta industry in an experimental way. The project focuses on collaboration with the community and the significance of clay. By working with local makers and the JaF community, the project explores the potential of clay and encourages knowledge exchange. It includes visits to terracotta factories, cultural research and clay experiments, and ends with a public installation that shares the results. The aim is to contribute to the identity and future of Jatiwangi through creative and community-oriented applications of clay.

The submitted proposals were assessed by the committee on the basis of three main criteria:
- The artistic quality of the work
- The quality of the proposed project
- The motivation in relation to the purpose of the residency and the intended international exchange

numbers

A budget of € 9,000 was made available by the Fund for this open call. Remi Groenendijk and Hein van Duppen each receive a subsidy of € 4,500, intended to cover travel, material and transport costs and as a contribution to living expenses.
