Miao Li | Miao Li
Designer Miao Li (Studio Miao Li) graduated from ArtEZ University of the Arts in Product Design. Working at the intersection of craft, ecology and psyche, Li designs ritual objects and scenarios for reflection, contemplation and introspection. For his intuitive practice, he uses plant fibres in different stages of their life cycle, such as Dutch seagrass, Filipino pandan and Japanese wara.
During the development year, Li is working on a design method with which he aims to bridge the gap between making processes and rituals. He is following two residency periods at zen temples in Japan (Eiheiji) and the Netherlands (Uithuizen). He is also organising four ceremonial workshops where participants experience, record and further develop ritual-making processes together.
In his development year, Li is being advised by designer Marcel van Kan and abbot Anton Tenkei Coppens Roshi of the Zen River Temple. Tjeerd Veenhoven is serving as mentor and expert on local material use. To share the results of his development year with a wider audience, Li is exploring options for a digital archive on his website and a physical exhibition.
