Artistic & Design Research for Immersive Experiences Grant Scheme2025
amount_issued: € 1.298.240

Futures of Listening has developed an R&D programme based on the principle of ‘listening to a multi-voiced world’. The consortium researches and develops new modes of immersive creation, listening and experiencing through spatial sound that deepen our understanding of the world and contribute to addressing societal challenges, such as inclusivity and environmental challenges. At the same time, it seeks to sustainably anchor spatial sound as an artistic and technological field within the broader IX sector, to enhance the quality of spatial sound experiences, to stimulate new forms of listening and knowledge transfer, and to strengthen the international position and accessibility.

The programme consists of a series of activities, realised through a community-driven approach with creators and researchers. At its core is a residency programme where makers - by invitation and via open calls - collaborate with researchers and developers on prototyping immersive creations, sensory storytelling, immersive listening and how to interweave the relationship between inclusivity, humans and non-humans. Four mutually reinforcing research areas are developed (‘message’, ‘perception’, ‘technology’, and ‘place & access’). This is supported by knowledge sharing and open-source tools, interfaces and instruments via symposia, an online platform, and a concluding publication. Other activities include international events, workshops, education, and mentorship.
