Dramaturgies of witnessing | Julien Thomas and Ekaterina Volkova

Julien Thomas, together with Ekaterina Volkova, is researching global climate negotiations from a dramaturgical perspective. They are drawing on existing research that highlights the performative nature of international meetings about climate agreements. For instance, the sometimes-unwritten rules, scripts and roles that apply during these meetings and are enacted by all the attendees. In collaboration with the Dutch delegation of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, UNFCCC for short), the designers want to design or redesign the prevailing ‘dramaturgy’ during a climate summit. The aim is to develop an alternative space, new process and/or narrative to enable new, more effective negotiation practices.
